WHAT???? How dare you ask such a question!!!!! KIDDING. But for reals folks, even before this monumental feat of human ability, using their hands to construct a useful structure, this monument has been known to be on everyone’s “bucket list”. Mine included – OF COURSE. It’s one of the new Wonders of the World:
In addition to all the myths and legends which surround “Great Wall”, one cannot forget the myth/story of it being the only man made structure visible from outer space. Regardless whether the wall can be seen from Outer Space or not, doesn’t matter. I visited it, and it ranks as one of the top 10 sites I have ever experienced.
Here’s my take away from my visit to this “Wonder of the World”. To begin, there are a couple sections you can choose from to visit the wall. My traveling mate and I chose the most scenic of the wall called “Badling”. We went in January and while the weather was chilly – it was QUITE bearable. In addition to this, the crowds were – well, there were NO crowds.
We arranged to go to the great wall using the tour company “Grey Lines Tours” and have to tell you, in a nut shell, DO NOT USE THEM!!! The tour was horrible, the guide and driver were great but they included tours to other things and frankly, we wished we had done just the wall and no other stops that day.
We later found out, for the same price, we could have hired a private car to take us and bring us back. Also, there is a way to take the train there, not their local system but the suburban system but we simply didn’t have the time. So folks, not much more can be said.
Tips for visiting great wall.
1. Take your time and ENJOY it!
2. Walk around and realize it is A LOT of walking so WEAR COMFY shoes
3. Bring some treats for the cats that live there, if you want
4. Bring water and HYDRATE yourself
5. Take LOTS of pictures, you will appreciate it when you get home
Let me know if and when you plan on visiting great wall and share in the excitement. And as always remember, “Ordinary people can travel to extra ordinary places”….
