After a wonderful night of cruising along the Adriatic Sea – yes, it was amazing and again as I will state many times, it was very very calm, we came into port to Athens, Greece.

As I made mention before – one treat you will want to make for yourself is get up early, and have breakfast out on the back deck of the ship as the view of the sun rising over Athens is pretty amazing! For this port, the main attraction is the Acropolis of Athens. Why not, it’s super old, amazing, and seen in every history book known to man.

Being budget minded travelers, cheap most call me, we decided to pay the cruise ship for the transport from the port to the downtown area of the city. There is NO WAY of walking there, and the bus/train system was just too complicated. It was worth every penny. They dropped us off and picked us up at the same spot across from Hadrian’s Gate.

Once there – and after seeing the CROWDS of people rushing off to the Acropolis and Museum, we asked the driver if there was a quieter place to see and enjoy the Acropolis and he said YES and told us about this hill. He offered to take up there for 5.00 USD. Once up there, he told us about a cafe and also told us how to get back down on our own.

For the hill see below:
Lycabettus Hill, Athens

Once we climbed up a huge staircase we were met by a waiter and escorted to a table with the most BREATH TAKING view of Athens, the Acropolis and most happily AWAY from the crowds. Also, there were locals there too and how cool it was to hear them speaking Greek. We ordered a cappuccino and my mate ordered some ice cream thing (he loves ice cream).

We stayed up there for about 2 hours and just RELAXED and enjoyed the sites. See my pictures as evidence. Once we tired of this, we figured, let’s make our way down to the Acropolis. It took up about an hour to get there but we walked all the way from the hill. If you are not fit to do this, there are cabs that can drive you back.

Once back in the Acropolis area, we actually took a wrong turn and realized we were not going to have enough time to make it up there but instead we bought a ticket and went to the Acropolis Museum and what an AWESOME treat this place was for us. For more reading click below:

Acropolis Museum, Athens

Folks, this museum is AMAZING. I cannot say it more simply than that, AMAZING. The main thing I would like to point out is the following, the Maidens up top on the actual Acropolis are replacements. The original ones are IN the museum and they were a SIGHT TO SEE.

After taking our time at the museum and just walking around, we were met at the meeting spot and went back to the ship. All in all, it ended up being a fantastic day.
